In 2021 my wife Jude and I (Erik) purchased 43 acres of Chihuahuan desert property in Terlingua, Texas close to Big Bend National Park. The land is entirely off grid, isolated, and amazing. Our goal is to build our own self sufficient home with solar and rain water catchment so we can move here full time.

Internet

We were looking at using Big Bend Telephone internet but the quality was poor and we would likley need additional equipment to get a decent signal. Luckily about the time we were getting serious about adding internet Starlink started offering satellite internet coverage in the area. total cost was 700$ for the equipment and 100$ per month. Setup was as easy as plugging in the router and placing the dish that powered up and automatically found the best line of sight on its own.

Speeds are usually >100 mbps and better than our wired internet in Austin (Time Warner). I am able to work remote from here running video meetings and multiple VPN connections. One cool feature of having our place far from other homes is our WiFi works as long as you still have a line of sight to our building. I’ve made phone calls from the highest point of our property. I think eventually I’ll add a WiFi repeater so we can have coverage on the back half of the property. Connectivity is a safety issue out here if something were ever to happen so I feel it would be a good investment. I’ve also share the guest login with my neighbor for these same reasons.

That little rectangular dish was all we needed to connect to the outside world from here.
